Recent History

To debut Kia vehicles in the United States, Dave Wolin Inc. developed a limited SCCA Pro Rally effort to showcase durability and reliability of the 1995 Kia Sephia. The first event, SCCA's tough "Rim of the World Rally" produced a win and was followed with numerous wins in west coast events, resulting in a California Rally Series Championship.

In 1996, the Dave Wolin Inc. motorsports team won not only the SCCA Pro Rally National Championship in production category, but also the SCCA Western Super Divisional Championship. As part of a motorsports promotion for Kia, our Sport Compact Car Magazine - sponsored Kia Sephia was featured in numerous automotive publications and, after debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show, went on tour around the country. The '96 Kia Pro Rally team was sponsored by Kia Motors America and supported by GAB Struts, PIAA Lights, Unifilter Air Filters, Schroth Belts and Harnesses, Autometer Gauges, Focus On Cars Film Support and Valvoline Synthetic Lubricants.

1997 marked the first year for Kia in road racing in North America, with substantial testing and then a  class win at the 24 Hour "Longest Night" race at Moroso Motorsports Park in Florida. And 1998 marked an expanded season of endurance races for Kia, designed to showcase the durability and reliability of the 1998 Sephia, with wins in a variety of events, ranging in length from 12 to 24 hours.

The 1999 season had Dave Wolin Inc. and Kia tackling new frontiers, with a concerted effort producing class wins in the American Open Road Racing Series, run flat out on closed public highways in Texas and Nevada.

2000 and 2001 included competition again in the American Open Road Racing Championship, initially with a 1999 Kia Spectra, where a new record of 129 mph was achieved and later in the season with a 2001 Kia Spectra, which went an amazing 131 mph. In 2001, a new '01 Kia Rio ran 114 mph at the Big Bend Open Road Race. The Kia vehicles are now part of the "World's Fastest Kia" tour at auto shows nationwide. 2002 marked the seventh season of Kia motorsports for Dave Wolin Inc. with a new '02 Optima, which exceeded 150 mph in virtually standard form.

These programs have now been concluded and no additional motorsports involvement is expected from Kia.
